Why War
Author(s)Freud, Sigmund
AbstractThis chapter contains Sigmund Freud’s answer to the question posed by Professor Einstein: Is there any way of delivering mankind from the menace of war? In his response, Freud states that war, a social phenomenon, and aggression, a personal phenomenon, are different manifestations of the same drive system. This drive system is changing along with the evolution of mankind. He claims that the psychic changes involved in this evolution process consist of the progressive rejection of instinctive reactions, and thus a gradual move toward passivism.
