Abstract
The present volume is devoted to the idea that we can empirically study quality of life and make comparisons of the subjective well-being of societies. It is unclear whether we will ever be able to conclude in a definitive way that one society is better than another in terms of overall quality of life because this judgment is so dependent on values. We can conclude, however, which societies have greater SWB–people in them evaluate their lives in positive terms.
