The author reintroduces the ancient question of the nature of the human good and its relation to morality and moral philosophy. The author offers answers to three questions–what is the best way to understand well-being? Can it be measured and where does it fit in moral and political thought. In this chapter the author defines accounts of well-being which serve as the basis for answering these larger questions.
