Many think that the intrinsic value of a life is determined by the extent to which that person’s desires or preferences are satisfied. But which preferences should we focus on, our actual preferences can be misinformed such that we might be no better off for having them satisfied. One very influential line of thought has it that it is the preferences we would have if we were fully informed that correspond with our well- being. In this paper I argue that such an approach is unworkable.
