AbstractThe idea of flourishing represents a particular way of explaining what the self-interest is. In this paper I explore the effect that this way of explaining self-interest has on the relevance of self-interest to ethical theory and, in particular, on the sort of theory that makes self-interest in some way the ultimate standard: namely, ethical egoism. I argue that it enables egoism to avoid otherwise embarrassing difficulties
