Abstract
Colonial viewpoints continue to impact discourses on gender and ethnicity in former colonies. This bias may be seen in examining the political participation of women in Burma. During colonial times, sexual and ethnic difference served as social divisions among the Burmese. In the post-colonial period, these divisions have shifted in response to the categorization of Burmese women as Third World victims. Personal narratives about the contemporary political struggles of Burmese women are included.
