Abstract
Indigenous identity has become an increasingly significant basis for political organization in Latin America. Powerful indigenous organizations have emerged in Ecuador, Bolivia, Mexico and Guatemala, but not in Peru. Indigenous organizations are now calling for independence and respect for local types of governance, and in this way are also challenging liberal democratic assumptions. These organizations call for multiple forms of citizenship, with indigenous authority being recognized in the indigenous territory and equal rights also being guaranteed at national level.
