The Modernity of Ethnic Identity and Conflict
Author(s)Riggs, Fred W.
AbstractModernization has fundamentally transformed inter-ethnic contact and social change, resulting in the formation of ethnic identity and the emergence of ethnic conflicts in different parts of the world. The escalation of world crisis, characterized by ethnic nationalism, civil wars and genocide, can be attributed to cultural differences. Furthermore, transnational movements of peoples around the world are on the rise due to the three fruits of modernity, namely, industrialization, nationalism and democracy.
