Turkish Conservative Modernism: Birth of a Nationalist Quest for Cultural Renewal
Author(s)Irem, Nazim
AbstractThe ongoing struggle between modernists and Islamic fundamentalists in Turkey began with the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923 and continues on into modern times. The Republican Conservatism nationalist movement, which wanted a return of Turkish language and culture, but resisted Islamic fundamentalism, is profiled, and its influence on Turkey today is described.
