Hemispheric Solutions? Neoliberal Crisis, Criminality And “Democracy” In The Americas
Author(s)Aiyer, Ananthakrishnan
AbstractThe transition to neoliberalism in the Americas over the past two decades has generated a profound social and economic crisis such that new configurations of coercive forms of state power are being established. In this context, attempts to consolidate stability and “democracy” have typically involved the expansion of law and order policies that seek to manage neoliberal crisis through increased militarization and criminalization of the population. The paper argues that the reemergence of coercive and authoritarian governments under neoliberalism in Latin America, despite processes of “democratization,” is linked in important ways to the shifting politics of U.S. imperialism.
