Abstract
Current scholarship on African democratization ignores the link between internal and external influences and wrongly emphasizes internal causes as the main factor in the process. There is a strong link between the internal need for democratization and the external support in the form of financial and political pressure from international institutions. Also, in many African countries it has been possible to do away with dictatorships only after they lost their external support. There is no minimizing the role of outside agencies in the process of democratization.
