The Nuer Concept of Covenant and Covenantal Way of Life
Author(s)Duany, Wal
AbstractAnalysis of the Nuer’s way of life showed that federal society can prevail even without alluding to the two or more levels of government which commonly characterize the current political system. The Nuer are the indigenous people of Southern Sudan inhabiting the Southern Clay Plain of the Nile River basin. They do not have a formal bureaucracy but instead operate on the imperatives of social interaction and concepts of covenantal relationships and mutual agreements. The Nuer is an acephalous society whose form of government is primarily influenced by their spiritual beliefs.
