State Sovereignty in International Relations: Bridging the Gap between Theory and Empirical Research
Author(s)Thomson, Janice E.
AbstractA review of research on sovereignty, state-building and the state was conducted in an attempt to summarize the state of knowledge on state sovereignty. Based on a theoretically coherent construct of sovereignty, criteria that would allow empirical testing of propositions about sovereignty, its historical status and its prospects for the future. It was proposed that more research is needed to examine ideas about rule-making and enforcement of authority, which are the foundations of sovereignty.
