AbstractThe mobilization of ordinary people has fuelled political changes and democratization in the Indian state of Kerala, in South Africa and in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The need to abandon deterministic models of the Left and Right when seeking to understand the conditions under which democratic governments can challenge neoliberalism is emphasized.
