Parity and Universalism
Author(s)Rosanvallon, Pierre; Collin, Francoise; Lipietz, Alain
AbstractA debate on parity and universalism is presented. Based on the assumption that parity denotes equality between men and women in representative bodies of political power, one argument claims that parity does not concern a philosophical position regarding status or gender, rather a political demand regarding shared citizenship. Another argument states that the demand for parity is motivated by the desire to eliminate discrimination in the representation of citizens, since representation in seats of power is dominated by men.
