Political Globalization: Trends and Choices
Author(s)Held, David; McGrew, Anthony
AbstractIn this age of globalization, communities can no longer be understood just in national or territorial terms. A continually increasing amount of cross-border communication, interaction, and reliance shapes the lives of such communities. Further, the emergence of a growing array of global issues has transformed ideas about political power and policymaking. In this article, the authors discuss three issues that highlight the changing constellation of politics. First, the article examines how globalization is altering state politics and policymaking. Then, it explores the implications of these political transformations for the notion of political community. Finally, the authors discuss the policy choices available and required to govern, democratize, and civilize globalization more effectively than at present.
