Abstract
The Maori people have been unfairly stereotyped as the Black Other by the media ever since New Zealand was first colonialized. The origins of their stereotypes can be traced back to New Zealand’s colonial roots during which the Maori were first labeled as the Black Other. Since the Maori themselves had no concept of identity as a “race,” the European settlers provided one for them. By tagging the Maori with an identity, the settlers were able to create an ideological sovereignty over them.
