In the Eye of the Storm: Sustaining the Space Created by Women
Author(s)Parker, Frances E.; Sofiarini, Rahmi
AbstractFrances Parker and Rahmi Sofiarini share their experiences in developing sustainable outcomes in working with poor, landless rural women on Lombok, Indonesia. They describe the outcomes achieved using a participative approach underpinned by an open and flexible approach, based on human values. It emphasizes difficulties in achieving sustainability given the current economic and political crisis, and concludes that we must ‘learn our way through it’, provided appropriate external resources are available. Nevertheless, sustainability is a moral imperative to ensure that the space created by women not only survives, but is enlarged and made stronger for more women ‘in the eye of the storm’.
