Abstract
Extant research literature on African American family life is generally flawed because it does not provide accurate information on its central elements. Black families are often portrayed as pathological, which undermines efforts to understand these families and to develop social policy addressing their problems. It is argued that there is a need to replace current literature with one that offers a more balanced and detailed view of African American family life.
