Abstract
Julie Cupples examines the way in which rapid historical change in Nicaragua has expanded the meanings of motherhood and, in the light of this expansion, the compatibility of women’s rights with children’s rights. Based on qualitative research conducted in Matagalpa, Nicaragua in 1999, she examines the links between motherhood, employment and political activism and explores how women who do not conform to dominant ideals of motherhood negotiate this in their daily lives.
