Abstract
The perspective outlined here suggests that as well as divisions between men and women, the relationships between different masculinities also play a part in the gender order. While in hierarchies of masculinities and competition between different masculinist interests, gender is unlikely to be the only or even the most salient division, it is worth examining because it allows us to think more clearly about the complex gendered relationships between differently positioned women and different groups of men. It also underlines the pervasiveness of masculinist strategies and gendered metaphors in struggles for power.
