Marriage and Family among the Tribals of Kerala: A Study of the Mannans of Idukky District
Author(s)Kattakayam, Jacob John
AbstractThe Mannans belong to the 35 Scheduled Tribes of state of Kerala in southern India. The state’s Idukky District is one particular area where Mannan settlements can be found. Mannan families are patriarchal and patrilocal. Clan membership is inherited by female line while property and debt is inherited through the male line. However, despite their relative isolation, the Mannans’ way of life, particularly the tribe’s family system, has undergone some transformations as a result of the influence of modern civilization.
