In this paper I discuss the difficulties of reaching an informed estimate of the number of Aboriginal children removed from their communities in the twentieth century. My argument is that we must rely on the deep knowledge of scholars of small discrete areas, not only well versed in oral and administrative history, but who also know well the Aboriginal families of that same area.
