The period of formal independence for former colonies of the Western powers can be used as the definition of the postcolonial era, and it marks out both a form of analysis and supposed historical epoch. The mutual roles of the colonized and colonizer is the central theme that defines postcolonialism. The West is no longer the historical center as in the past and there is an unraveling of the former colonial world.
