Advocates of Islamic revivalism reject traditional Islamic religious practices, rationalizes religion and closely relates religion with social action and winning political power. Regarded as a revolutionary force to topple the established order in both authoritarian and democratic Islamic countries, Islamic revivalism has been effectively suppressed in many countries and with particular ruthlessness in Iraq and Syria. Concerns about the potential growth of Islamic revivalism with increasing democratization are unfounded because the realities of democratic political processes will necessitate the rejection of doctrinaire revivalism.
