John Porter The Vertical Mosaic remains an outstanding example of the power and stratification approach to the study of a total society. This paper discusses his work in a context of similar studies. Some points on Porter’s approach to power and legitimacy are examined, as are certain comparative problems in the area of national elite studies. The paper concludes by relating recent changes in the institutional basis of Canadian capitalism and the state to general propositions derived from Porter’s plural elite approach.
