Abstract
China’s Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s generated global interest and Maoism gained popularity in the industrial West, and in Eastern European and Third World countries. The activities and remarks of certain intellectuals made a general contribution to the global enthusiasm for Cultural Revolutions, but the enduring influence of the cultural revolution was mainly due to the efforts of the French thinker Louis Althusser. The continuing debate about Chinese modernity should be integrated with critical reflection on the Cultural Revolution.
