The distinction between public and private spheres has been variously drawn, but religion is generally considered private. However, recent developments such as the Islamic revolution in Iran and the political influence of Protestant fundamentalism have challenged the privatization of religion. The public/private distinction can differentiate established from disestablished religions, civil religions from alternative religious communities, individual mysticism from denominationalism, or home from religious market. However conceived, religion is unlikely to remain in the private sphere.
