The hegemony theory of the Italian communist Antonio Gramsci can be compared to Chinese communists’ theories of cultural revolution, and this provides some insight into China’s current transformation. However, China now faces problems of cultural commodification as it enters a market economy and engages with western economies. Ideas of hegemony or cultural revolution must address systematic transformations to remain relevant.
