Abstract
Symbolic politics implies preservation or change of a power relationship through the use of various representations such as the use of appeals to ideas and values to bring about social change through collective action. A theoretical explanation of how values change political consciousness and how transformation in political consciousness translates into social change through the mechanism of symbolic politics is presented.
