Official social classifications conflict with the ideology of the liberal state, but are necessary for political administration. The development of racial, ethnic and occupational classifications in the US illustrates some of the political issues and processes involved. A hierarchy of preferences has developed, in which classifications based on race or religion are least acceptable and classifications based on voluntary behavior are most acceptable.
