Abstract
Modern Western shamanism, or “neoshamanism,” is discussed in relation to 19th-century thought, with a focus on the dialectical process of “disenchantment” and “resacralization of the world.” Topics include desacralization, old and new shamanisms, concepts of nature in neoshamanism, animism and the feeling of connectedness, deep ecology, and concepts of nature in 19th-century thought, including Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, Novalis, and romantic pantheism.
