The politics of abortion in Poland, the US and the UK reflects the different relations among church, state and the medical profession in the three countries. In the UK, abortion has been regarded as a medical decision, and the issue has not become as politicized as in the US and Poland, also in part because of the lesser influence of religion. In the US, Roe v. Wade made abortion a right rather than a medical issue, while the right to abortion has been opposed by a coalition of Catholics, Christian fundamentalists and secular conservatives. In Poland, which is 95% Catholic, availability of abortions has been curtailed under recent legislation.
