Abstract
Media coverage of an apparition of Mary, mother of Jesus, seen in Clearwater, FL, in 1996, demonstrates the need for a flexible framework that accepts the complex social effects of religion. Secularization, the most common contemporary approach to religion and social change, is no longer sufficient.
