Abstract
The case of the Singapore River development zone as a ‘hyper-symbol’ of Singapore’s global urbanism is presented. The waterfront of the Singapore River is a highly contested landscape criticized for its rampant commercialism and loss of public spaces, and for privileging cosmopolitan rather than Singaporeans.
