“Without Working?” Capitalism, Urban Culture, and Gay History

Abstract
Toronto’s gay history is explored to illustrate the relative roles of capitalism and urban culture in the historical formation of gay/lesbian identities and communities. The industrial capitalist transformation of Toronto led to the spread of wage labor and developed some unconventional desires in some workingmen.
