Abstract
China’s rapid population growth is not solely the major cause of the continued deterioration of the environment. Increased urbanization and industrial growth are also major contributors of pollution. The combination of these three bodes ill for the nation’s environment. However, continued growth has also resulted in dramatic improvements in public health such as a drop in mortality rates for children. Minimizing the negative impact of economic development and population growth are keys to preventing further environmental degradation.
