Creating the Image of a Modern Fortaleza: Social Inequalities, Political Changes, and the Impact of Urban Design
Author(s)Gondim, M. P. Linda
AbstractThe elements that contributed for creating an image as ‘the Brazilian Caribbean’ were studied for Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara, as it was an image of a poor and backward city being reinvented as rich and modern city attractive to tourists. The new image was associated with political marketing by those in government that shaped an urban structure marked by contrasts and therefore the contradiction between the persistence of misery and the positive transformation of the city’s image is more apparent than real.
