Cross-cultural research involving 120 Kenyan children from urban middle class, rural and poor semiurban areas reveals children from rural and poor semiurban areas score higher on tests that measure cooperative goal-oriented behavior. Urban middle-class children who scored high on individual competitiveness had drastically lower performance on tests that required adoptive cooperation.
